Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

The opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to oversee the maintenance and reliability of electrical infrastructure, ensuring compliance with business objectives and statutory requirements. The role will also involve managing a small team and providing specialist technical expertise and guidance. 

This role operates on an 8 days on and 6 days off roster - FIFO from Perth or DIDO from Geraldton 

To be successful in this role, you must have the following: 

  • Electrical Engineering qualification recognised by Engineers Australia
  • Current membership with Engineers Australia (desirable)
  • WA C-class Australian driver’s licence
  • Proven experience as an Electrical Engineer working within a mineral processing plant and utility infrastructure environment
  • Exposure to HV and LV electrical reticulation and protection systems
  • Demonstrated ability leading a small to medium size team
  • Experience working with High Voltage (HV) conditioning systems, load shed and reject systems and back up generation
  • Previous experience in reviewing risk and preventative maintenance strategies
  • Demonstrable success in the development, set up and implementation of plant reliability processes and systems and establishing baseline definitions (advantageous)
  • National Police clearance

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Improve reliability and performance of site power and processing infrastructure
  • Develop maintenance strategies and risk mitigation plans for HV assets, including the Three Springs–Karara transmission line
  • Ensure HV asset compliance with AS 3000, AS 2067, Mines Regulations and applicable legislation
  • Lead engineering projects and reliability initiatives, reporting progress to key stakeholders
  • Lead and mentor the electrical engineering team, managing priorities, performance and costs
  • Manage vendors, contractors and preventative maintenance outages
  • Liaise with Western Power and manage contractual obligations
  • Develop and manage the Karara power budget, identifying cost and efficiency improvements
  • Manage key equipment supplier agreements, including SEL, AMSC and Siemens
  • Report on asset condition, reliability and performance to key stakeholders
  • Provide technical support to the Electrical Maintenance team
  • Develop and maintain 330 kV and 132 kV transmission line maintenance strategies and procedures
  • Lead transmission line condition monitoring, assessment and corrective actions
  • Ensure transmission assets comply with ERA requirements and ETL6 Transmission Licence conditions
  • Lead RCA on failures and provide breakdown support to all levels within the Electrical and Instrument team
  • Manage the operating philosophy of all 330KV switching and act as an authorising authority for HV switching programs involving 330KV
  • Manage the control methodology of statcom, reactors, capacitor banks and load shed/load reject system
  • Provide competency based training to all appointed HV operators to ensure compliance with rules and regulations

Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
