Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Karara mine is located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia and is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.
The opportunity
We are currently seeking an experienced Operational Technology (OT) Engineer to join our Maintenance team at the Geraldton Karara Export Terminal.
The OT Engineer bridges the gap between physical electrical infrastructure and digital control systems. This role involves designing, programming, maintaining, and safely troubleshooting the site's heavy electrical systems (such as LV distribution and motor control) alongside its Operational Technology (OT) stack, including PLCs, SCADA, industrial networks, and cybersecurity. The main objective is to ensure high plant reliability, enhanced data visibility, and strict adherence to electrical safety standards.
This residential role operates on 8 days, and 6 days off / 7 days on and 7 days off roster.
To be successful in the role, the following is essential:
- An Engineering degree or Electrical Trade Certification with a WA Electrical licence
- 2 years minimum working with PCS and OT systems hardware and software
- GE Cimplicity SCADA version 8.2 or higher programming software experience
- Experience or Certificate of Attainment/Participation - Microsoft Windows Server, Ethernet Industrial network and FieldBus
- Experience working with Windows 2019 Servers and Industrial Ethernet networking
- Strong logical problem-solving ability
- Electrical, electronic, and data communications knowledge, including Profibus DP and PA, Modbus/TCP, and 4-20mA
- Experience working with PLCs, SCADA control systems, and communication network paths
- National Police clearance is required to obtain MSIC

Key Duties:
- Perform preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on electrical, instrumentation, and control systems
- Diagnose and fix faults in power distribution, motor control, drives, and instrumentation
- Execute electrical installations, modifications, isolations, and commissioning per site standards
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC, HMI, SCADA, and communication systems
- Integrate and support instrumentation, analytical, and automation equipment
- Assist with commissioning, testing, and continuous improvement of control systems
- Manage OT infrastructure: servers, virtual environments, historians, databases, networks
- Oversee network performance, cybersecurity, backups, and disaster recovery
- Maintain accurate documentation: electrical drawings, P&IDs, control system diagrams
- Conduct root cause analysis; implement corrective actions
- Support operations, maintenance, site improvements, and projects
About Karara Export Terminal
Enabling movement to the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, Karara owns and operates an 80 km railway linking Tilley Junction to the mine site in the Shire of Perenjori. The terminal is capable of processing up to 16 million tonnes of export products annually from a dedicated berth, with supporting rail and train unloading infrastructure.
