Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

The opportunity

We are currently seeking an experienced Production Isolation Officer to oversee the creation, execution, and maintenance of the site-wide Permit to Work system.

This role involves daily planning, issuing, and monitoring of permits and isolations, along with preparing permits for upcoming work and shutdowns. Additionally, it is essential to provide prompt responses to breakdown tasks to ensure equipment is restored and operational as quickly as possible.

This role operates on an 8 days on, 6 days off and 7 nights on and 7 days off continuous day shift roster.

To be successful in this role the following is essential:

  • Previous experience as a Permit Officer, Isolation Officer or similar
  • Level 1 & Level 2 Isolator
  • WA "C" Class driver's licence
  • Proven experience in mineral processing including crushing, grinding, flotation, thickening, and filtering plants.
  • Demonstrated experience with Permit to Work and Isolation/Tagging systems and applicable legislation 
  • Permit to Work and Isolation/Tagging systems
  • A current National Police clearance

To be eligible to apply for this role you must be legally permitted to work permanently in Australia.

Key Duties:

  • Coordinate with process operators to ensure safe, controlled equipment shutdowns for repairs to prevent process material discharges
  • Verify maintenance crews leave areas tidy before permit closure
  • Respond quickly to breakdowns to restore equipment promptly
  • Conduct effective weekly permit handovers with clear scope and schedules
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities in the Permit to Work system
  • Complete and file permit documentation accurately for investigations and audits
  • Review production schedules to set priorities and isolation needs
  • Prepare shutdown permits and plans in advance for efficient execution
  • Participate in maintenance planning to support scheduled and breakdown work
  • Maintain and review group isolation lists for routine maintenance permit creation

About Us

Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
