Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

The opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our onsite team and provide engineering support to optimise crushing plant equipment performance, ensuring operational targets for cost, production, and safety are achieved.

This position operates on an 8 days on and 6 days off roster.

To be successful in the role, the following is essential:

  • Recognised Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
  • WA "C" Class manual driver's licence.
  • Minimum 5 years’ mining experience in mechanical engineering within a processing plant environment (preferably Magnetite processing).
  • Experience working with a variety of equipment such as: conveyors, slurry pumps, crushers (gyratory and cone), high-pressure grind rolls, ball mills, tower mills, magnetic separators.
  • Demonstrable success in applying engineering principles and statistical data analysis and implementing processes.
  • Familiarity with Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and 5 Whys work process methods and tools.
  • Practical statistical analysis skills including failure statistics, failure rates, hazard rates, and life expectancy.
  • National Police Clearance.

Key Duties (but not limited to):

  • Support the business by identifying, investigating, and resolving mechanical engineering issues associated with operating equipment.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to deliver engineering support that improves equipment reliability and helps achieve operational targets related to cost, production, and safety.
  • Ensure all work undertaken by the Mechanical Maintenance and Engineering Department complies with KML site standards, regulatory and statutory requirements, and relevant Australian standards.
  • Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, and fault finding while providing technical engineering advice to ensure issues are resolved safely and efficiently, maximising equipment availability and production performance.

About Us

Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
