Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

The opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Advisor Health & Safety to join our site-based Health, Safety & Training team. The Advisor will be responsible for promoting a positive health and safety culture in the workplace through collaboration with Managers and employees to ensure the health and safety management system is understood and consistently applied across the site. You will also plan, implement, monitor and review of protective and preventative safety measures including compliance to company and legislative requirements are supported by the Advisor Health & Safety.

This position operates on an 8 days on 6 days off roster flying out from Perth.

To be successful in the role, the following is essential:

• A Diploma in Work Health and Safety.
• Experience in Incident Investigation Techniques (ICAM, TapRoot and/or 8 Steps / Essential Factors).
• Working knowledge of relevant legislation particularly Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and Regulations 2022.
• Demonstrated experience in a similar role in the resource sector. 
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Outlook), INX (desirable) and other applicable software programs.

Key Duties include (but are not limited to):

• Carry out assigned tasks to assist in the development and implementation of projects from the annual Health, Safety and Training strategic plan.
• Support the application of Karara’s risk management processes including risk assessments at the individual, group and organisational levels.
• Coach, mentor, advise and review incident investigations and support the tracking of preventative / corrective actions through to completion.
• Maintain integrity of data in the Karara Incident Management database INX.
• Conduct data analysis to identify trends and inform health and safety improvement initiatives.
• Assist with the planning and implementation of health and safety improvement initiatives.
• Provide specialist advice and support with regard to all relevant health and safety legislation and Karara’s safety policies and procedures.
• Deliver site inductions, toolbox talks and other health and safety training programs, as required.
• Support Karara’s hygiene monitoring program by conducting atmospheric contaminant sampling and calibration of sampling equipment.
• Complete health and safety audits and inspections in accordance with Karara’s compliance monitoring program and prepare reports clearly articulating findings, non-compliances and opportunities for improvement.
• Identify practical solutions to health and safety issues or problems.
• Ensure all meetings, reports, and tasks are completed in a timely manner in accordance with the Health, Safety and Training management schedule.

Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
