Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

The opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Superintendent Maintenance Planning to lead maintenance planning, site works, cost control and administration personnel whilst managing maintenance systems, processes and high level strategies, ensuring equipment is maintained in an efficient and cost effective manner optimising production. This position operates on 8 days / 6 days off roster flying out from Perth or drive in / drive out from Geraldton.

To be successful in the role, the following is essential:

  • Tertiary qualification in either Mechanical or Electrical engineering or trade qualification with strong post trade experience.
  • Significant maintenance planning experience within the mining or other heavy industry (fixed plant preferred).
  • Previous experience within a supervisory position leading a small to medium size team.
  • Strong knowledge of mineral processing plant equipment and infrastructure.
  • Sound understanding of Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) planning modules including SAP.
  • Previous experience developing and implementing budgets.
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite including Outlook and Excel.
  • Western Australian C Class Drivers Licence.
  • National Police Clearance (minimum 6 months old).

Key Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Demonstrate personal leadership by meeting all Karara safety policy and procedure requirements.
  • Role-model safe work practices and positive safety leadership to others in your job.
  • Ensure the maintenance planning system is populated with data to sustain plant operations.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and technical knowledge to the Maintenance Planning team.
  • Develop department budgets and identify strategic cost controls for consideration of the Manager Maintenance & Engineering.
  • Oversee the department cost reporting and review maintenance costs to identify cost saving opportunities.
  • Ensure the integrity of the computerized maintenance management system is maintained and utilised efficiently.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for business improvement though strategic planning.
  • Provide technical knowledge and support where required regarding planning, equipment, systems and cost controls.
  • Participate in the development of improvement strategies and procedures for equipment and maintenance activities.
  • Be involved in initiatives to improve cost effectiveness and productivity for the organisation.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of sophisticated maintenance schedules to ensure optimum availability and operational efficiency of equipment.
  • Identify value creation opportunities from shutdowns and coordinate communication and implementation of these ideas.
  • Coach and lead direct reports to seek continuous improvement within their roles.

About Karara Mining

Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
