Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, KML is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.
The opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Reliability Engineer to join the team on site working on a 5:2 – 4:3 roster. You will be responsible for enhancing the reliability, performance, and lifespan of equipment and systems by developing and implementing effective maintenance strategies. The role focuses on minimising equipment downtime, reducing unplanned maintenance, and optimising maintenance schedules to improve overall plant productivity.
To be successful in the role, the following is essential:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- Demonstrated experience in a similar position within the mining industry.
- Knowledge of maintenance strategies like Predictive and Preventive Maintenance.
- Experience with Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Failure Analysis to fix equipment problems.
- Familiarity with Condition Monitoring tools (vibration, thermography, etc.).
- Understanding of mechanical, electrical, and process systems (e.g., pumps, motors, conveyors).
- Ability to manage critical equipment and improve reliability.
- Ability to analyse reliability data (failure rates, downtime, etc.) to improve performance.
- Experience using maintenance management systems (CMMS like SAP).
- Ability to create maintenance plans that improve equipment reliability and reduce costs.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and ensuring maintenance work follows safety standards.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and clearly communicating technical issues.
- Experience in managing improvement projects and delivering them on time.
Key Duties:
- Develop and implement reliability-cantered maintenance (RCM) strategies to optimise equipment performance and reduce unplanned downtime.
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for equipment failures, identifying the underlying issues and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Monitor and analyse equipment performance using predictive maintenance techniques and data analytics to anticipate failures and improve system reliability.
- Create and maintain comprehensive maintenance plans that ensure optimal asset performance while reducing risk and improving the overall reliability of critical equipment.
- Review and recommend improvements for maintenance procedures, tools, and equipment to enhance reliability and extend asset life.
- Maximise equipment uptime by proactively identifying failure trends and addressing reliability issues to support production goals.
- Reduce maintenance costs by implementing cost-effective maintenance strategies that increase the efficiency of resources, time, and equipment.
- Increase operational efficiency by ensuring that reliability initiatives align with business objectives, minimising downtime and disruptions.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards, mitigating risks and improving operational safety while meeting business and safety goals.
- Improve asset lifecycle management by extending the useful life of critical equipment through optimised maintenance practices.
- Deliver continuous performance improvements in equipment reliability, supporting the plant’s production targets and overall business efficiency.
- Achieve cost savings through the reduction of unplanned breakdowns, maintenance downtime, and spare parts inventory.
- Contribute to the achievement of company KPIs by ensuring that the reliability of equipment directly supports the organisation's goals for safety, cost, and production output.
About KML
Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia, KML has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network KML owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the KML mine site, linking the KML Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
